Question: How can I use cloth diapers when I need to wash in a laundromat/shared laundry facility?

Answer
One of the things people are most concerned about is disparaging stares from others as you put your dirty diapers into the washers. The instructions below will enable you to wash at a shared facility with confidence!
You will need:
  • A wet bag (a smart decision because it pays for itself. (Otherwise you're using a petroleum based plastic trash bag which heaven forbid someone should mistake your diaper stash for trash and there goes your investment). Bringing the whole plastic diaper pail is just not discreet and will proabably result in a few raised eyebrows at the laundromat--if not a guided tour or the exit door.

  • Enough diapers on hand to last you through the week before needing to wash(( optional but more economical).
Here's how it works:
  1. After each diaper change, pre-rinse each diaper after use using your mini-shower and squeeze out the excess water into the toilet. Store your now basically clean diaper in the wet bag and wait until wash day. Now you have basically clean, damp pieces of cloth that nobody will mind or notice you putting into a shared laundry facility

  2. If the washing machines have different cycles, follow the same washing instructions as listed by manufacturer. If not, wash everything on cold using no detergent or just a splash of it. This serves as your pre-wash and loosens up any soil or bacteria that built up.

  3. Now wash on warm using ?- ? the recommended amount of detergent

  4. Sort out anything with PUL (ie. Fuzzi Bunz, Wet bags, Thirsties, also Bumkins)-line dry these.(The heat of these industrial strength dryers will ruin the waterproofing on these covers so don't even think about putting anything with PUL in there

  5. Cottons now go in the dryer
That?s it. Really simple.
